Gillian Muessig, known online as @SEOMom on Twitter, is the co-founder of SEOmoz (now Moz) alongside her son, Rand Fishkin.
What began as a simple blog evolved into one of the most respected names in Search Engine Optimisation, serving as a global hub for search marketers. SEOmoz provides free and subscription-based tools, analytics, guides, and Q&A support, making it a cornerstone of the SEO industry. Known for her passion and vibrant personality, Gillian has been a driving force behind SEOmoz’s growth and impact.
NC: How did you first get involved in SEO?
Gillian: Rand Fishkin (CEO) started the SEOmoz.org blog before it became a full-fledged company. When he decided to monetise the blog, he guided the company through its early days of development. I learned SEO the same way more than a million people have—through the SEOmoz blog.
NC: What has surprised you most about working in this industry?
Gillian: The joy and hope that permeate this industry, even as other sectors face economic challenges.
NC: What do you find most challenging about this industry?
Gillian: Managing an ever-growing network of colleagues spread across different countries, languages, and economic conditions.
NC: What’s the best and worst thing that has happened since you started in search marketing?
Gillian: The best moment was raising $18 million in funding on May 3. The worst was leaving SEOmoz on June 30, 2012.
NC: If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
Gillian: I’d reduce the number of people trying to game the system with tactics designed to exploit the web rather than contribute value.
NC: How do friends or family react when they find out you work in SEO?
Gillian: They’re often surprised and delighted to see a middle-aged woman excelling in a field dominated by young men. It seems to bring them a sense of joy and inspiration.
NC: Who has influenced your decision to work in this space?
Gillian: Michelle Goldberg of Ignition Partners, who provided the first funding for SEOmoz, has been a significant inspiration, particularly in the finance world.
NC: What do you think will change about search marketing over the next five years?
Gillian: As mobile technology becomes more integrated into daily life, the web will transform how we interact, do business, and connect. It will evolve into a personal assistant, offering everything from tailored recommendations to memory management.
NC: What trends do you see emerging in the digital space? What do you think the next big thing will be?
Gillian: Gamification will revolutionise learning and daily activities, making digital natives healthier and more productive. For example, mobile devices will incentivise better grades and healthier lifestyles. I believe the traditional school system will soon be replaced by technology-driven education models.
NC: If you weren’t in SEO, what would you be doing?
Gillian: I’d be a motivational speaker for entrepreneurs. Helping others navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship is a passion of mine. I’d travel the world, inspiring and guiding them to persevere and succeed.
Gillian’s insights reveal a deep understanding of the SEO industry and a vision for the future of technology and human connection. Her passion and experience continue to inspire marketers and entrepreneurs worldwide.
