A conversation about the future of travel: my interview with Bloomberg TV

Recently, I had the privilege of joining Bloomberg TV to talk about the incredible opportunities in the global travel industry, especially in the rapidly growing Chinese market. The discussion was lively, thought-provoking, and gave me a chance to share how our company, HotelClub, is striving to bring more value to travellers worldwide.

China: A Travel Powerhouse in the Making

During the interview, I highlighted an exciting fact: China is now the largest outbound travel market, surpassing even Germany. It’s incredible to see more Chinese travellers venturing to destinations like the United States and Australia. Their enthusiasm for exploration is inspiring, and we’re committed to supporting this trend.

One of the steps we’ve taken is partnering with Alipay, making us the first global online travel agency to collaborate directly with this platform. This partnership is about more than just payments, it’s about tapping into a trusted network that connects us with millions of potential travellers. As I mentioned in the interview, we’re aiming to launch our fully localised Chinese site by the end of the year, ensuring a seamless experience for these new users.

What About the Economic Slowdown?

One of the questions I was asked was whether China’s economic slowdown might affect travel demand. The answer, thankfully, is no. The love for travel remains strong, and outbound travel is continuing to grow. It’s heartwarming to see this resilience, which speaks to the universal desire to explore and connect.

Top Destinations: Thailand Leads the Way

During the conversation, I also shared some of the travel trends we’re seeing. Thailand is a clear favourite, with Bangkok and Phuket attracting visitors not only from China but also from Australia and Europe. It’s wonderful to see such diverse groups of travellers coming together in these vibrant destinations.

Navigating a Competitive Industry

The travel industry is undeniably competitive, and this came up during the interview as well. I acknowledged that platforms like Agoda.com are strong players, but I explained how we’re taking a different approach. Rather than focusing solely on price, we’re building a membership model that offers tangible benefits, such as:

  • Complimentary upgrades and breakfasts.

  • Rewards that are easy to redeem anywhere in the world.

  • A personalised, thoughtful customer experience.

This strategy, as I shared, isn’t just about competing; it’s about creating a deeper connection with our travellers. Travel is more than transactions—it’s about memories, and we want to make those memories even more special.
