Finding inspiration in Finding Ultra: a journey of endurance and transformation

When I first picked up Finding Ultra by Rich Roll, I was already deep into my own training for the Sydney marathon. Let me tell you, there’s something special about reading a book like this while pushing yourself through long runs, early mornings, and moments of doubt. Rich’s journey isn’t just inspiring, it feels personal, like having a coach who’s been through it all cheering you on from the sidelines.

A story of transformation

Rich Roll starts his story in a place many of us can relate to: stuck, unfulfilled, and feeling far from his best self. At 40 years old, he couldn’t climb a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Yet, in the face of all that, he managed to turn his life around in a way that’s nothing short of extraordinary.

As I read about Rich’s struggles with addiction and his fight for sobriety, it struck a chord. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything, which makes his transformation all the more remarkable. He went from hitting rock bottom to becoming an ultramarathoner, a feat that doesn’t just require physical endurance but a deep, inner strength.

Lessons from the Ultraman

One of the most jaw-dropping parts of the book is Rich’s account of the Ultraman World Championships, a three-day test of endurance that makes marathons look like warm-ups. As I slogged through my long training runs, I thought of his grueling swims, endless bike rides, and ultra-long runs. It reminded me that so much of endurance training is mental. Sure, the physical preparation matters, but it’s the belief that you can keep going that truly gets you across the finish line.

What I appreciated most, though, was how humble Rich remained throughout. Even as he recounted his incredible achievements, he never came across as boastful. Instead, his tone felt like a nudge, a warm reminder that we’re all capable of more than we think.

The plant-based connection

Rich credits a lot of his success to switching to a plant-based diet, and he explains it in such a down-to-earth way. I’ll admit, during my own marathon prep, I didn’t go fully plant-based, but his arguments got me thinking about how food fuels our bodies and minds. He shares how his diet helped him recover faster and feel more in tune with his body, which made me rethink a lot of my own choices.

What I loved most was how he didn’t push it on you. It felt less like, “You must do this,” and more like, “This worked for me, maybe it could work for you, too.” That openness made me want to give some of his ideas a try.

Running with Rich

As I trained, I found myself thinking about Rich’s story during the hard moments. When my legs felt like lead or when I questioned why I’d signed up for a marathon in the first place, I’d think of his words: “Limits are an illusion.” It became a bit of a mantra for me, and it helped me push through when I needed it most.

Rich’s journey reminded me that the real growth happens in the uncomfortable moments, the long runs in the rain, the aching muscles, and the self-doubt. Those are the times when we learn what we’re made of.

Why you should read this

If you’re training for a marathon, dreaming of a big goal, or simply looking for a story that will remind you what’s possible, Finding Ultra is worth picking up. Rich’s humility and authenticity make it feel less like a “how-to” and more like a heartfelt conversation with someone who genuinely wants to see you succeed.

For me, this book wasn’t just about endurance sports or plant-based diets—it was about believing in transformation. Whether you’re starting from scratch, like Rich, or just looking for that extra spark, his story reminds us that it’s never too late to chase the best version of ourselves.

So if you’re out there, lacing up your shoes, hitting the trails, or just dreaming of what’s next, take Finding Ultra along for the ride. It’s the perfect companion for anyone on a journey of growth, both on and off the road.
